You Will Be Responsible for 85% of the Digital Content Universe

IDC Predicts that by 2011, while nearly 70% of the digital content universe will be created by individuals, organizations (businesses, agencies, governments, associations, etc.) will be responsible for the security, privacy, reliability, and compliance of at least 85% of that same digital universe.
The airwaves, telephone circuits, and computer cables are buzzing. Digital information surrounds us. We see digital bits on our new HDTV’s, listen to them over the internet and create new ones ourselves every time we take a picture with our digital cameras. Then we email them to our friends and family and create more digital bits.
Chevron corporatiton says they generate 2 terabytes of new digital bits per day. What does this ever expanding digital universe imply for those of us living and working within it.
IDC has published a paper titled “The Expanding Digital Universe” and it works to help us understand the digital universe and how we might best live and manage within it.
Here are some additional summary facts from this great report:
- By 2011, the digital universe will be 10 times the size it was in 2006.
- By 2011 almost half of the digital universe will not have a permanent home.
- The diversity of the digital universe continues to grow, from 6 gigabyte DVD’s to 128-bit signals from RFID tages.
- The number of information “containers’ — files, images, packets, tag contents is growing 50% faster than the number of gigabytes.
- The information created in 2011 will be contained in more than 20 quadrillion — 20 million billion — of such containers.
How will me manage all of this?
